Music for Writing and Reading

Like a few other people, I depend on having something to listen to in order to write. Listening while reading is less of a big deal for me, but it’s a nice way to feel more enveloped by the experience. I decided I would put together a list of songs, soundtracks, and albums that work well as background music. They will probably all work well for studying too!

Game Soundtracks for Writing and Reading

Music from video games is designed to fit into the background. It is cyclical in nature, which makes it less distracting than other types of music. These tracks are instrumental and can be found on YouTube either as a single loop or extended versions. Others might be on Spotify. Here we go:

  • Xenoblade Chronicles: Colony 9 (Day)
  • Xenoblade Chronicles: Gaur Plain (Day)
  • Skyrim: The Streets of Whiterun
  • Skyrim: Secunda
  • Zelda Wind Waker: Dragonroost Island
  • Zelda Ocarina of Time: Gerudo Valley
  • Donkey Kong Country 2: Stickerbrush Symphony
  • Witcher 3: The Trail
  • Minecraft: Sweden
  • Skyrim: Ancient Stones
  • Halo: Halo
  • Zelda Wind Waker: The Great Sea
  • Skyrim: Dragonborn
  • Witcher 3: Geralt of Rivia
  • Persona 5: Beneath the Mask
  • Diablo III: New Tristram

I could add a ton more to this list, but I will probably do more of these lists later, and divide them up by theme and era. Except for Stickerbrush Symphony, the above are orchestral, not chiptune or midi. I might do a set of all chiptune writing music later, or lists themed by console or mood.

Movie Soundtracks for Writing and Reading

  • The Lord of the Rings Movie Soundtracks
  • Star Wars: A New hope Soundtrack
  • Superman: The Movie Soundtrack
  • Hook Soundtrack
  • Wonder Woman Soundtrack
  • Dune (2021) Soundtrack
  • Back to the Future Trilogy Soundtrack
  • Zack Snyder’s Justice League Soundtrack
  • 007 Skyfall Soundtrack
  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Soundtrack
  • Man of Steel Soundtrack

I’m sure I’ll come up with more later. A lot of John Williams, but it’s hard not to pull from his work. Zack Snyder’s Justice League is exceptionally long, giving you lots of time to just write or read without worrying about running out of tracks.

YouTube Writing Music

I found this series recently, and I wanted to show it off. It works well in my opinion. The first video has some talking in the beginning, but you can just skip past it. The songs used are nicely segmented along the timeline for your convenience. Happy reading/writing!

Listen Along while Reading Withered Kingdom

If you’ve seen a single post from my blog before, you know I always end with a plea to check out my book. I’m a fantasy author, and my latest novel, Withered Kingdom is the story of a man that everyone thinks is an angel, but he doesn’t believe it. He has lost all memory of his past life, and must learn how to survive in a world torn apart by war and magic.

A lot of the music I suggested above (particularly the movie soundtracks) will fit rather well with the atmosphere of the book. If you like this blog post, please share it on your social media. If you found your way to this post through social media, please like/react, comment on, and share where you found it. It means the world to me!
