It is no longer 2’s day, and the day after is already almost over, but I wanted to make a post about some things. I found this site called onthisday.com and am enjoying learning little tidbits about famous births, deaths, and events in history related to the present date. There’s one really big event in literary history that happened today. Can you guess what it is?
February 23rd in History…
Way back, 567 years ago, Johannes Gutenberg printed the Bible for the first time. At least, today’s the estimated anniversary. It’s hard to be certain when five centuries have gone by. Whether you’ve read the Bible or not, it’s a significant day for the history of all books ever since. The invention of the printing press would go on to change the world, by making it easier for everyone to access books, and therefore, increase literacy.
It is also the birthday of W.E.B Du Bois, who would write many books during his life. His birthday coincides with Black History Month as well.
The film adaptation of “Trainspotting” by Irvine Welsh was released in the UK and Ireland on this day back in 1996 too.
Back in 1889, Victor Fleming was born on this day. He didn’t write anything, but he did direct two super-successful movies based on books. The two are “Gone with the Wind” (which I haven’t seen) and “The Wizard of Oz” (which I have seen more times than I can count).
