Dune, if you haven’t seen it, is the second attempt at a theatrical adaptation of Frank Herbert’s groundbreaking science fiction novel. Unlike the previous attempt, this one garnered almost universal acclaim. With the honor of being nominated for 10 academy awards, Dune has proven its worth.
Dune Oscar Nominations
Even if it wasn’t the biggest film of 2021 (that has to go to Spider-Man: No Way Home), it earned more nominations than most science fiction movies do. Those ten are listed below:
- Best Original Score
- Best Visual Effects
- Best Cinematography
- Best Production Design
- Best Makeup and Hairstyling
- Best Film Editing
- Best Sound
- Best Picture
- Best Adapted Screenplay
- Best Costume Design
For a movie based on a science fiction book from back in the 60’s, that’s incredible. The director, Denis Villeneuve viewed it as a passion project, being a huge fan of the book series. It’s a shock he wasn’t nominated for Best Director, but he has to be proud with how well the movie did overall. Speaking of…
Dune Oscar Wins
Dune won a total of 6 Oscars. I’m surprised it lost Adapted Screenplay and Costume Design, but it deserved every ounce of the ones it did win. Click the links to see the acceptance speeches. Those wins are:
I’m biased, as a fan of the books, but Dune has to be one of the best movies made in the last year… or two. Or more.
Should I Watch Dune?
If you want to see Dune, you can check it out with a subscription to HBOMax. While the impressive scope of this massive movie isn’t the same at home as it was in theaters, the movie is still a magical experience. The runtime passes 2 hours and 30 minutes, but the action moves along quickly. At that, this movie is technically just “Part 1.”
Dune part 2 has been greenlit by Warner Bros. but such a massive movie is going to take time to produce. I don’t expect it to arrive until the holiday of 2023 or sometime in 2024. This movie will wrap up the events of the first book, but it’s going to be hard to tell if the sequel book, Dune Messiah will be adapted to the screen. The later books are not going to be easy to film for reasons I won’t go into, but I hope to see the third book, Children of Dune make it to the big screen eventually. If anyone but Denis Villeneuve is at the helm, I’m not sure it will be any good.
Is Dune Good?
I’m outspoken about seeing this movie. I think everyone should. Even if you just subscribe to HBOMax for one month, it’ll be worth it. Staying firmly in PG-13 territory, the film is comfortable for just about anyone teen or older to watch. Honestly, I can’t pick out a single thing that I don’t like about it. Rebecca Ferguson as the lady Jessica is, in no uncertain terms, EXACTLY what I envisioned in my head almost ten years ago when I first cracked the spine of the novel. Her performance remains my favorite, even with Zendaya and Jason Momoa being incredible.
As a miniature “Reviews Nobody Asked For” post, I give Dune 2021 a 10/10. It’s stunning, the music is incredible, and every frame feels like a masterpiece. It’s fitting that a movie starring Oscar Isaac should clean up at the Oscars.
The spice must flow!
