5 Useless Facts About George R. R. Martin

In my progress through the Audible version of A Game of Thrones, I felt like this would be a fun, random topic to blog about. As you probably know, George R. R. Martin is the author of the fantasy novel series, A Song of Ice and Fire, which was adapted by HBO as simply Game of Thrones.

5 Useless Facts

George R. R. Martin is a fan of the New York Mets

Don’t believe me? (You can trust me, I’m a random person on the internet!) Just read this blog post from his site. I’ve never been a big fan of baseball, but it is fun to be at a game live. He also hints at being a New York Giants fan too. Now I’m imagining chatting with him about football. What an experience that would be!

George R. R. Martin Wrote for The Twilight Zone

No, not the 60’s one. The 80’s one. Didn’t know that was a thing? Neither did I until just a couple of years ago. I’m a big fan of the 60’s incarnation, and although I watched some of the early 2000’s revival, I can’t say that gives me confidence that any other revivals will ever reach the kind of fame and cultural significance that the original did. Martin wrote a short (it’s actually quite long) story called Sandkings that I read in college, and that has me convinced that he could write good Twilight Zone type stories. Maybe it’s time to dig up the 80’s stuff.

It’s Been 10 Years Since A Dance with Dragons

I’m not saying this to put him on blast, but readers have been waiting a decade now for The Winds of Winter to release. Helping create multiple HBO shows throughout that time will slow someone down. The first three Ice and Fire books came out rather close together. I hope that when The Winds of Winter does release, it won’t take as long for A Dream of Spring to wrap things up, If that’s indeed what it does.

George R. R. Martin Wrote for Max Headroom

I don’t expect most of my generation to know who/what that is. If you saw the café 80’s scene from Back to the Future: Part II though, it would look familiar. I KNOW a lot more people my age know about THAT movie. If you ARE familiar with Max Headroom, then this fact is a bit less useless.

With the Martin being more closely attached to HBO’s Game of Thrones content than most authors are with adaptations of their work, HBOMax could end up being the home of a lot of really unique and fun shows based on Martin’s work. Read more about it here. Could be a lot of fun!

I wrote a book too. It’s not as long as any of the Song of Ice and Fire books, but it should be worth a solid day’s worth of reading, depending on your speed. It’s been a passion project of mine for years, and I’m excited to see people read it and talk to people about it.
