Most of the best video games are original games, you know? A lot of the worst are licensed from movies, television shows, and even books. Notable exceptions include the early 2000’s Lord of the Rings games, late 90’s and early 2000’s Star Wars games, and—the big one—Witcher III: The Wild Hunt. There aren’t a lot in the vast sea of licensed games. So finding out a video game was made for The Wheel of Time (a long time ago, the real news is a re-release) made me squint. Let’s dive a little deeper…
Do Book-Based Video Games Even Make Sense?
Video games are a unique medium. They require input, problem solving, and usually a little bit of skill. Games are made to accommodate a player’s choices, so no game can strictly adapt a book, movie, show, or something else. (Let’s just ignore visual novels and Telltale-style games where you’re just kinda playing a story from beginning to end, okay?)

If by “based” we mean “loosely-based” maybe there’s some room to explore a future full of book-based games. Honestly, the most successful licensed games take the most liberties. It’s too bad many game studios are forced by corporate executives to churn out games like a cheap toy company throws together action figures and dolls to merchandise the latest summer blockbuster.
The Wheel of Time Video Game
Daniel Greene is one of my favorite sources for fantasy-related news, so I learned about the game from him. He describes the game as a Doom clone, basically. More on that in his recent video here:
He reviewed the game a little while ago, which you can also watch below if you’re interested. I can’t find the video of his “let’s play,” but yeah, even booktubers have to stream games these days, sheesh.
From Software Partners with Brandon Sanderson?
I probably don’t need to italicize From Software but if I don’t the title looks like the word “From” is being used as a preposition, instead of a noun. 🤷♂️
Anyway, That’s all there really is to the news. The game developer that made Elden Ring and Dark Souls (which famously collaborated with George R. R. Martin for the former) has contacted Brandon Sanderson about… something. That’s all there really is to say. I have no idea if this means they want to adapt some of his books or if they want him to write an original story for a game. I honestly hope for the latter here.

Self-publishing through Amazon, the book is ready now as a Kindle eBook and as a paperback. I’m pulling together plans to get the hardcover done, but it will take a little bit of time.

No money to buy the book right now? No problem, you can still support this blog and my writing FOR FREE😲 by sharing these posts on your social media. I’m active on all of the following, so please like, comment, retweet, subscribe, follow, and all the other things!
