I saw a YouTube video today that got me thinking… what makes prose good? That was the title of the video, and it made me want to share it. Aside from embedding it below, I wanted to say some quick thing on the topic of prose and what makes it good.
What Makes Prose Good?
As soon as I clicked on this video a number of my own opinions about prose ran through my head. By the time it was done, I realized it really is a subjective thing. Everything I thought he would talk about, he didn’t. He brought up a bunch of things I wouldn’t have mentioned, which is broadening my horizons.
What I Think Makes Good Prose
Maybe Professor Craig will see my comment and respond on some of this in the future, but here’s a quick list of things I thought he might talk about, but didn’t:
- Varied sentence length (throughout a paragraph)
- Innovative use of vocabulary (like nominalization, verbalization, or unexpected yet fitting adjectives)
- Soft vs hard consonant sound patterns
- Poetic Devices (like alliteration, assonance, stressed/unstressed syllable patterns)
- vowel sound patterns
- concrete imagery
All of these may end up being blog topics in the near future.
