I took to twitter a week or so ago to talk about what I thought Nintendo would do for its next console. Yes, I’m an author, but playing video games is my biggest hobby by total time elapsed. So why not write about video games? Especially since #E3 isn’t even happening this year? Read more below:
Tweeting About Video Games
Nintendo has been VERY reliable about one thing: releasing a new home console every 5-6 years (if you start counting from the 1985 US release of the NES, and ignore the much earlier initial release of the Famicom in Japan). Since the Nintendo Switch first released in spring of 2017, we are due for a new console between Q4 2022 and sometime in 2023.
Looking back, the Nintendo Switch was first announced as project NX at least a year before the console arrived, so… Nintendo is cutting it close. I anticipate some kind of “project” announcement this summer. As I address in the tweets, the Switch OLED is a modification on the same platform (like the DSi and DSlite modified the original DS, but all played the same games).
There’s about 19 tweets for the full thread, just so you know. If you don’t want to zoom over to Twitter right now, you can read all of it below!
Read the Full Thread Here:
🕊 Since the #NintendoSwitch OLED is an enhancement on an existing platform, what would the next console be? Assuming it’s another hybrid handheld/home system, here’s some thoughts…
🕊 It has to have an OLED screen, right? How about a 1080p display (handheld)? Since #Nintendo always relies on dated but practical graphical standards, I doubt they would go beyond 2K resolution
🕊 Unless it was docked, of course. They might go with docked upscaling beyond 2K. Improvements to polygon counts seem irrelevant to me. They should prioritize stabilizing framerates and rendering higher quality textures
🕊 There’s no reason they can’t make a sequel to the #Switch that plays #TheOuterWorlds at least as well as the #PS4 did. And wow is the Switch port bad.
🕊 I expect #Nintendo will push cloud gaming harder with the next console. I’m not saying that’s a good thing unless fiberoptic internet rolls out real quick-like. It can’t be a half-hearted effort server-side either
🕊 PLEASE let the #NintendoSwitchOnline NES, SNES, N64 and Genesis games be available on the next console from the get-go. Maybe roll out Gameboy and GBA at the same time?
🕊 I know we all get annoyed at the slow trickle of new NSO games, but I get it from a business standpoint. Too many options all at once would give players decision paralysis. Seeing new stuff hit every couple weeks builds anticipation.
🕊And release #MOTHER3. Literally nobody is more critical of western culture than the Switch’s target audience.
🕊 Backwards compatibility to #NintendoSwitch seems too obvious to mention but you never know with the gaming industry. Or Nintendo as a whole.
🕊 Maybe side-by-side releases of dockable and Lite versions like how the #PS5 and #Xbox series consoles have disc drive/non-disc drive versions.
🕊 Bluetooth headphone connectivity right out of the box, please. It’s so welcome on the #NintendoSwitch. Get rid of the phone app and have a native voice chat app! This should be obvious too!
🕊 I hate that a Switch voice chat app seems so unlikely given the company’s history. Just put it in and make it work with bluetooth headphones! It can’t be that hard!
🕊 I can’t help but think #Nintendo should partner with #Samsung or some other mobile phone manufacturer to make the next console more appealing to phone-only gamers.
🕊 I’m not saying you should put the #Google #PlayStore app on the console but… the companies could work together to create standards for games to work with Switch2.
🕊 And #Nintendo should absolutely keep pulling in #indiedev games. Corner that market. Maybe even promote #indiegames with NSO.
🕊 If #Nintendo added a streaming app to make it easier for small-time content creators to get started and avoid legal action, it would be natural promotion the best ad agency couldn’t create.
🕊 I know their philosophy is games first, but people don’t experience games they way they used to. This is the #twitch generation now. Democratize the way people WILL game, not just how they used to.
🕊 In the end, a Switch2 needs to be prepared to offer something unique and desired by the gaming community, casual gamers, and non-gamers. Phone gaming is a growing threat to #Nintendo hardware success.
🕊 If they refuse to grow, improvements to #Stadia, #VR games, the #Steam deck, and #AmazonLuna could spell trouble for #Nintendo. What else could they do to follow up on the Switch’s success?
